Highlights of Foreign Policy Achievements under President Yameen Released

In a month that marks the second anniversary of President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom's election to office, the High Commission of the Republic of Maldives to the United Kingdom has released a document highlighting the foreign policy achievements of the Maldives during his Presidency thus far.

On the release of this summary document High Commissioner to the UK, H.E. Mr Ahmed Shiaan, remarked:

"We've made remarkable achievements in our foreign policy over the past two years. Not only have we increased our bilateral and multilateral ties, and continued to provide quality consular services to Maldives, but also we continue to punch above our weight on climate change issues. Having been elected as Chair of AOSIS a year ago, we head into COP21 leading the voice of Small Island Developing States"

Speaking at a press conference held on 17 November 2015, to mark the 2nd Anniversary of His Excellency President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom’s Government, Minster of Foreign Affairs, Ms Dunya Maumoon, noted that the Maldives has been able to weather the storms that it encounters by holding onto a robust foreign policy that rests on Islamic principles of tolerance and respect together with diplomacy and engagement. She stated that the strategic steps taken by the government when the country’s self-determination is threatened have ensured that the Maldives has and will continue to hold a strong position in the international community.

Meanwhile in the UK, the High Commission has further strengthened ties with friends of the Maldives in UK Parliament and the London diplomatic corps, and continued to support the many Maldivians that come to visit and study in the UK. Indeed, the High Commission played an important role in marking the 50th Anniversary of the Independence of the Maldives, by organising a diplomatic reception, hosted by Minister Dunya, for  political and business leaders in September. Leading British peer, The Rt Hon Baroness Warsi, attended as Guest of Honour.

Additionally, the High Commission has continued to promote tourism and stoke interest in the Maldives amongst the British public, most notably through a boduberu music and dance performance on London's cultural hub, the Southbank, in August.
